Stars Shut Out Oilers in Preseason Finale

Friday night’s preseason finale was a chance for some of the Dallas Stars’ depth players to make an impression, and they made the most of the opportunity. With a lineup featuring nine rookies, the Stars defeated the Edmonton Oilers, 4-0, at Cox Convention Center in Oklahoma City.

The Stars, who didn’t play several of their top players in the game and suited up four rookies on defense, shut down a pretty strong Edmonton lineup, limiting the Oilers to just 20 shots on goal in the game.

Dan Ellis registered the shutout in goal and Austin Smith, Luke Gazdic, Vernon Fiddler and Brett Ritchie scored the goals for the Stars, who finished the preseason with a 5-0-2 record.

The Stars outshot the Oilers 12-8 in the first period and Smith, the Dallas native, tallied the only goal, beating Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk with a shot from a sharp angle at the 11:07 mark.

Ellis came up with a couple of big saves late in the period, stopping two point blank chances by Oilers forward Ryan Smyth.

The Stars extended their lead to 2-0 at 12:55 of the second period when Luke Gazdic scored from the right circle off an odd-man rush.

The Stars made it a 3-0 game close to the midway point of the third. Ryan Garbutt came down the left wing, eluded a hip check by Justin Schultz and Fiddler got the puck and scored from the slot at the 9:14 mark.

Oilers coach Dallas Eakins pulled Dubnyk with eight minutes remaining and his team down three goals, but the move didn’t pay off. Ritchie scored into an empty net at the 7:26 mark to give the Stars a 4-0 lead which held up the rest of the game.
