Tuesday Practice Update

The NHL regular season gets underway with three games tonight. The Dallas Stars, meanwhile, will have to wait a couple days before they get to open the 2013-14 campaign.

“The tough part now is waiting for a couple more nights to have opening night,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “Pretty well done all you can do and you sit there trying to think of something else you can do while the other teams are playing for a couple of nights.”

The Stars coach said he likes where his team sits following training camp and the preseason. The Stars posted a 5-0-2 record in exhibition play, and Ruff saw plenty of positives.

“There’s lots of things to like about what we did in training camp. The challenge is to put that behind us and get ready for that first game,” Ruff said. “On the offensive side of it, I thought we played well. We scored enough goals. I thought we cleaned up our defensive play towards the end of camp. We worked hard on special teams to put in how we want to kill and some of the execution we want to try on the power play. We want to continue to do that. The areas I talked about were solid. The faceoff percentage has to get better.”

The Stars worked some on special teams Tuesday. They continue to go with four forwards and one defenseman on the power play. Ruff said he likes the option of having right-handed shots like Alex Chiasson and Ray Whitney available for one-timers.

“It’s a good look for us,” said Ruff. “It’s not as good a look when you bring a defenseman in there and he’s a left-handed shot and can’t one-time pucks. It’s a look we want those guys to be comfortable with and a look we want to try.”

Quotable: Tyler Seguin

“Feeling great, feeling really excited. Feeling more comfortable than I did the first day. I’m forming chemistry with some of the guys and learning the system. It’s a new system for everybody with a new coaching staff and new management. We’re putting it all together and I think everybody feels pretty good and ready for the home opener.”

Injury notes

*Stars defenseman Trevor Daley (upper body) said he’ll be ready for Thursday’s opener against Florida.

*Stars coach Lindy Ruff said forward Rich Peverley (irregular heartbeat) is still on target to be ready for the second game of the season.

*Ruff said defenseman Aaron Rome (hip surgery) is expected to practice with the team for the first time on Wednesday.
