Stars-Red Wings Morning Skate

The Dallas Stars look to go three for three on their road trip when they take on the Detroit Red Wings tonight at Joe Louis Arena.

The Stars have shootout wins over Ottawa and Boston already under their belt on the trip. In fact, their last three games have gone beyond regulation. Stars coach Lindy Ruff said if the team’s power play could have chipped in recently, the Stars could have taken those games in regulation instead of rolling the dice in the shootout.

“It’s made the games closer and we could put games away,” Ruff said. “We’ve had situations where we could put games way, even in Ottawa and Boston, same thing, we had an opportunity where it could make a difference. We had a couple of good looks, and when you are struggling you get a little bit of tunnel vision. There was a (Trevor) Daley look late where (Ray) Whitney was wide open. You look at those situations and you think those are the perils of yelling sometimes too much about getting pucks to the net, and we’ve tried to stay away from that. But those are plays that will usually turn into goals for you.”

The Stars are 0-10 on the power play over the last four games, and 1-21 over the last seven.

The Red Wings come into tonight’s game struggling to find any kind of goals at home. They have three goals over their last three home games and have scored more than two goals just one time in their seven home games this season. Thursday’s game opens a four-game homestand for the Red Wings, who are 0-1-2 in their last three at Joe Louis Arena.

“We’re going to have to find a way to get on a roll here because we’ve got to make this a tough place to play,’’ Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard told Detroit media. “This is a great place to play, in front of our fans, how passionate they are. We just got to come out and be focused.’’

Red Wings forward Jordin Tootoo cleared waivers Thursday. He’s expected to be assigned to Grand Rapids of the AHL in the near future, but will stay with the NHL club for now.
