Stars-Rangers Morning Skate
Stars forward Alex Chiasson, who was injured in Wednesday\u2019s practice after taking a puck to the face, skated this morning and will play tonight against the New York Rangers.

Stars forward Alex Chiasson, who was injured in Wednesday’s practice after taking a puck to the face, skated this morning and will play tonight against the New York Rangers.

“It’s just a little sore. There’s nothing that would cause any concern,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “Obviously we were worried about it yesterday, but he’s going to be OK.”

Chiasson was injured when a deflected puck caught him in the face. He wore a protective shield at this morning’s skate at American Airlines Center.

“I’m feeling OK,” Chiasson said. “Yesterday for an hour or two, I was kind of scared. I didn’t know what was going on, but I am glad I am good. … It will be sore a couple of days, but I’ll be OK to go tonight.”

Forward Ray Whitney skated with the team this morning, but will miss his fourth straight game with a groin injury.

“He is getting closer,” said Ruff. “He’s had two practices that we’ve ramped up a certain degree, but he still hasn’t done any of the heavy stopping and starting. We’d like to get him into some of that today and some of that tomorrow. We’ll see where he is tomorrow if he gets in a good workout today.”

MacDermid clears waivers

Forward Lane MacDermid cleared waivers Thursday morning. The Stars are expected to send him to the Texas Stars of the AHL at some point.

Quotable: Rangers forward Brad Richards on Jamie Benn

Thursday’s game is the first time Brad Richards has played in Dallas since departing the Stars as a free agent at the end of the 2010-11 season. Among the topics Richards talked about after Thursday morning’s skate was Stars captain Jamie Benn. Richards and Benn played together two seasons in Dallas.

“He’s a great player. Saw that a long time ago,” Richards said. “He wasn’t near as much work as say James (Neal) was off the ice, but he was still young mentally. But he kind of sat back and always was observing and watching people. You could tell he was soaking a lot of things in early. A very respectful young player, which it’s 50-50 now sometimes to be honest with you. Some guys come in and think they know it all, but he was not like that and you just see him growing better and better on and off the ice every year. It’s great for him to be a captain. He’ll help out that situation for a long time.”
