Fiddler Out for This Week
It looks like Stars center Vernon Fiddler will miss at least this week with the upper body injury he suffered in Saturday\u2019s 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

It looks like Stars center Vernon Fiddler will miss at least this week with the upper body injury he suffered in Saturday’s 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Flyers.

“He’s going to be out with an upper body [injury] for at least this week,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “We’ll see where he is at the end of this week.”

Fiddler left Saturday’s game in the first period and did not return. His injury is the third one to hit the Stars recently. Defenseman Stephane Robidas is out 4-6 months with a broken leg and defenseman Trevor Daley is out several weeks with an ankle injury.

“Every team deals with it,” Ruff said. “Early on we didn’t deal with a lot and now we’ve dealt with two pretty serious ones on the backend. It doesn’t look like Fidds will be a long time, so it’s something we’ve got to get through, other guys have to elevate their play and fill bigger holes.”

With Fiddler out, Ruff will have to shuffle his lines. He put Cody Eakin in Fiddler’s spot between Antoine Roussel and Ryan Garbutt during Monday’s practice, a move he made in Saturday’s game as well.

“I look at them as a real hard line to play against, lots of speed,” Ruff said. “It’s an option if I want to go that route in the Chicago game.”

Shawn Horcoff centered Erik Cole and Alex Chiasson on Monday. Ray Whitney, Rich Peverley and Dustin Jeffrey were another line. The top line of Jamie Benn, Tyler Seguin and Valeri Nichushkin remained intact.

Sceviour recalled

With Vernon Fiddler out, the Stars recalled forward Colton Sceviour from the Texas Stars of the AHL on Monday. Sceviour skated as an extra forward in Monday’s practice.

“Obviously, I am happy to be here,” Sceviour said. “We’ll see what happens. Hopefully I’ll get to see some game action and see what happens.”

The 24-year-old Sceviour leads the AHL in goal scoring with 18 in 26 games. His 30 points rank second in the league. He’s been playing right wing on a line with center Travis Morin and left wing Curtis McKenzie with Texas, and is on pace for a career season.

“It’s confidence,” Sceviour said. “I think I’ve been known to have slow starts, take a little while to get going but once things get going they go well. This year I’ve been fortunate that things have gone well right off the bat, and when things go well things start going better even more often. The confidence builds and snowballs. I’ve been feeling confident and things have been going my way.”

Sceviour had a strong training camp and preseason with Dallas. He had 5 points (4 goals, 1 assist) in four preseason games, tying for the team lead in both goals and points.

“On the offensive side he’s got a great shot,” Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. “I thought he finished our preseason as one of the better players, and from what I understand he’s been really good down there.”

Sceviour, a fourth round pick in 2007, is in his fifth professional season. He’s a versatile player who can play all three forward positions, power play and penalty kill and slide up and down the lineup.

“I’ve played all over in my five years and I can fit anywhere if there is room,” Sceviour said. “I think that helps to get in the lineup to not just have one specific skillset, to be able to be plugged in anywhere. I hope that helps get me in the lineup, but that’s out of my control. I am just happy to be here and see how it plays out.”

Blackhawks up next

The Dallas Stars take on the Chicago Blackhawks Tuesday at American Airlines Center. It will be the third meeting between the two teams in the last 12 times and fourth in the last month.

Chicago won the first two meetings but the Stars won the last won, topping the Blackhawks, 4-3, at United Center last Tuesday.

“It’s fun,” said Stars defenseman Alex Goligoski. “It always seems a little heated, we get up for those ones. It’s fun, especially when you see them a lot. Both teams are real familiar, everything is fresh. It should be a good battle.”
