Lindell, Finland Win Opener at World Juniors

Stars defense prospect Esa Lindell and Finland opened the 2014 World Junior Championship with a win Friday, topping Norway, 5-1, in Malmo, Sweden.

Lindell, Dallas’ third round pick (74th overall) in the 2012 NHL Draft, played on Finland’s top defensive pairing in the game. He had no points, two shots on goal and a plus-two rating.

Finland’s top line of Teuvo Teravainen (Chicago), Saku Maenalanen (Nashville), and Artturi Lekhonen (Montreal) combined for six points in the game.

In Friday’s other game, Slovakia routed Germany, 9-2. Columbus prospect Marko Dano scored two goals for Slovakia and Montreal prospect Martin Renway chipped in with one goal and three assists.

Stars prospect Radek Faksa will be back in action Saturday when Czech Republic takes on Canada in the second game of the tournament for both teams.

“Lindell is a big two-way defenseman with the ability to score points. He was the leading scorer of his junior team Jokerit two years ago, when he recorded 51 points in 48 games. He was selected the best player of regular season that year.”
