The Dallas Stars have had their ups and downs on the power play this season, but it’s been clicking lately, especially at home where it has struggled.
The Stars scored just two power play goals in their first 16 home games, but they have scored three in the last two tilts at American Airlines Center.
“I can’t say we weren’t doing things properly before,” said Stars forward Erik Cole, who scored the Stars’ first power play goal Tuesday. “We just weren’t getting enough pucks to the net and second and third chances and being opportunistic as much as we should have been. Our power play has been better on the road, and I think it is starting to carry over here at home.”
The Stars ended up 2-5 on the power play in Tuesday’s game, and probably could have scored a couple more goals. The opportunities were there. But it did score the team’s first two goals, helping erase a 1-0 Los Angeles lead.
“It did some good things,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “It missed on some good opportunities, but it helped win us a game.”
The Stars are 3-10 (30.0%) on the power play over the last two games. They are 4-17 (23.5%) over the last four games.
Quotable: Stars coach Lindy Ruff’s New Year’s resolution for the Stars
“The only one is to stay grounded. We’ve got a lot of work ahead of us. Try to stay consistent. Our work ethic in the first 40 games has been good and if we can consistently work like that then we’ll have success. Come to work each day and go to work, and we’ll have results.”
Quotable: Kings coach Darryl Sutter on his team’s penalties in the game
“There were five penalties tonight, so what’s the same about any of them? What were they? Drew (Doughty) got one just trying to prevent a goal. Willie (Mitchell) got one for shooting one into the stands. Jordan (Nolan) got one neutral zone where he put his stick out. We had one referee that we had last night in Chicago. He looked fatigued to me.”
