Stars-Red Wings Preview

Detroit Red Wings at Dallas Stars
Saturday, January 4
7:00 p.m.
TV: Fox Sports Southwest
Radio: The Ticket 1310 AM/96.7 FM

About the Stars

The Stars (20-13-7) had a seven-game points streak snapped with a 6-4 loss to Montreal Thursday night at American Airlines Center. It was the Stars’ first regulation loss since Dec. 16 at Colorado.

“I’ve got to be honest, I didn't believe we deserved to win that game,” said Stars center Tyler Seguin. “I didn't think we earned it. I think they were faster than us tonight, they competed harder than us tonight, and I think we got a little complacent after having a solid few games in a row. We’ve got to be good at practice [Friday] and get ready for a heck of a team in Detroit on Saturday.”

Saturday’s game against Detroit will wrap up a five-game homestand for the Stars. They are 2-1-1 in the first four games.

Seguin and forward Rich Peverley missed Friday’s practice due to illness. Ray Whitney and Shawn Horcoff, who both missed Thursday’s game due to illness, both practiced Friday.

The Stars assigned RW Colton Sceviour to Texas of the AHL on Friday.

Injuries: F Ray Whitney (illness) is probable. F Tyler Seguin (illness), F Rich Peverley (illness), F Shawn Horcoff (illness) and D Sergei Gonchar (concussion-like symptoms) are day to day. D Trevor Daley (ankle) and D Stephane Robidas (leg) are out.

About the Red Wings

The Red Wings (18-14-10) are coming off a 3-2 shootout loss to Toronto in the Winter Classic in Ann Arbor, Michigan on Wednesday. Justin Abdelkader scored with 5:32 left in regulation to force the extra playing time, but Toronto took the shootout 2-1. The big story of the day was the experience of playing in the outdoor game in front of 105,491 fans at the Big House.

"It was the best experience I probably ever had playing hockey," Abdelkader said. "It was awesome. It brings you back to your childhood days when you're out on the pond or playing in the backyard. It was a lot of fun."

Added Detroit coach Mike Babcock, “A home run for hockey.”

Saturday’s game opens a stretch of four road games over a span of nine days for the Red Wings, who have won only three of their last 12 games (3-6-3).

The Red Wings recalled defenseman Alexey Marchenko from Grand Rapids of the AHL on Friday due to an injury to defenseman Danny DeKeyser.

Injuries: F Patrick Eaves (upper body), F Darren Helm (shoulder) and G Jonas Gustavsson (groin) are day to day. D Danny DeKeyser (lower body), D Jonathan Ericsson (ribs), F Johan Franzen (head) and F Stephen Weiss (sports hernia) are out.
