Seguin Feeling Better, Should Play Tonight vs. Wings

Despite some players feeling under the weather, everybody was on the ice for the Dallas Stars this morning as they prepared to take on the Detroit Red Wings at American Airlines Center tonight.

Tyler Seguin and Rich Peverley, who both missed Friday’s practice due to illness, skated this morning.

“I was pretty white yesterday,” Seguin said. “I got to the rink, and they pretty much said get out of here. But I am feeling better.”

Stars coach Lindy Ruff said all the players who have been battling illness are willing to go tonight, and they’ll see where everybody is tonight.

“Everybody from the MASH unit came in this morning and is willing to play,” Ruff said. “I think a couple are doing a lot better than a couple of them, but again we’ll get through it and we’ll decide by game-time. We’ll dress extra guys and make sure that who’s here is going to be ready to play.”

Defenseman Sergei Gonchar won’t play tonight. He could return when Stars open their road trip against the New York Islanders on Monday.

“I would expect Sergei to be back on the Island,” said Ruff. “He was actually hoping maybe for tonight. My feelings were hold him out, get him real good skate today, another real good practice and he’ll be over it.”

Gonchar went out with concussion-like symptoms after getting hit in the head with a puck in the Dec. 21 game in San Jose. The symptoms are gone, so it’s a matter of conditioning at this point.

“Pretty much I was sitting and not doing anything for 10 days, so you’re losing conditioning obviously. So I’ve been getting better and better every day so we have to keep improving,” Gonchar said.

Dan Ellis was the first goaltender off the ice for the Stars this morning, so it looks like he’ll get the start tonight for the Stars. It will be his first start since Dec. 17, when he stopped 25 of 27 shots in a 3-2 win over Colorado at the AAC. Ellis is 4-0-0 at home this season with a 2.39 goals against average and .919 save percentage.

Daley skates with team

Stars defenseman Trevor Daley, who has been out since early December with a high ankle sprain, skated with the team this morning.

“First time to skate with the team, it was good to act like a regular for once,” Daley said. “It’s been a long month. I am excited to get back to practice and get some sweats.”

Daley said he expects to go through a full practice Sunday and then will travel with the team on the upcoming road trip, during which he hopes to get into a game.

Quotable: Detroit coach Mike Babcock on the Stars

“I think they’re lightning quick actually. I think Garbutt, Roussel and Cody Eakin and how do you say 43’s name? (Val Nichushkin), yeah that way. Big time speed obviously Benn is one of the best players in the league right now, he’s really dynamic with the puck, he’s magic. And so when you look at that and your franchise you have suddenly I think two upper-end players in Benn and him at a young, young age and that means starts to grow for your franchise. And to be honest with you, to get this again you’ve got to finish last or second last and to be able to do that without doing that is a special thing.”
