Lindell and Finland Top Canada, Will Play for Gold at World Juniors

Dallas Stars defense prospect Esa Lindell will play for gold at the World Junior Championship in Malmo, Sweden. Lindell and Finland knocked off Canada, 5-1, in the semifinals on Saturday to advance to the gold medal game against rival Sweden on Sunday.

Lindell had no points, no shots on goal and an even rating in Saturday’ game for Finland, which took a 2-0 lead early in the second period against Canada and never looked back. Chicago prospect Teuvo Teravainen had two goals and one assist for Finland, which is looking for its first gold medal at the tournament since 1998.

Lindell, Dallas’ third round pick (74th overall) in 2012, has four points (one goal, three assists) in six games for the Finns. Lindell is tied for sixth in defensemen scoring at the tournament.

Sweden advanced to the gold medal game with a 2-1 victory over Russia in the other semifinal game on Saturday. Pittsburgh prospect Oskar Sundqvist’s breakaway goal that gave Sweden a 2-0 lead 4:55 into the third period held up as the game-winner. Sweden has yet to lose a game at the tournament, winning all four of its preliminary round games and both its playoff games to advance to Sunday’s gold medal showdown with Finland.
