Texas Stars Report

The Texas Stars won two of three games last week, briefly moving into first place in the Western Conference before dropping back to second. The Stars, who are 16-4-1 over their last 21 games, are currently first in the West Division with a 27-12-5 record.

They set a franchise record with 59 shots on goal in a 6-4 win over Grand Rapids, and they continue to be one of the top offensive teams in the league, ranking second in the AHL in scoring at 3.66 goals per game.

Stars forwards Colton Sceviour, Travis Morin and Chris Mueller are the top three goal scorers in the AHL. Texas boasts four of the top eight point producers in the league in Morin, Sceviour, Curtis McKenzie and Mueller.

Here’s the latest on Dallas’ AHL affiliate.

Wednesday, January 22: Texas 4, Iowa 3 (SO)

The Stars ran their home winning streak to 11 games with a 4-3 shootout win over the Iowa Wild Wednesday night at Cedar Park Center. Curtis McKenzie, Chris Mueller and Colton Sceviour scored in regulation and then Sceviour and Mueller tallied in the shootout. Travis Morin registered three assists. Cristopher Nilstorp got the start in goal, but was knocked out of the game late in the second period after he was injured in a collision with Iowa’s Chad Rau. Josh Robinson took over in net and got the win. Nilstorp was listed as day to day with a lower body injury.

Friday, January 24: Texas 6, Grand Rapids 4

Texas made it 12 straight wins at home and took over first place in the Western Conference with a 6-4 win over Grand Rapids at Cedar Park Center. Grand Rapids battled back from 4-0 and 6-2 deficits to keep the game interesting.

“I was happy with the way we played even after we were up 4-0,” said Sceviour. “We had a lot of possession time, shots. They are a good team. They were first in the conference coming into tonight for a reason.”

Brendan Ranford had two goals and one assist and Morin had one goal and two assists for Texas, which set a franchise mark with 59 shots on goal in the game. Sceviour, Derek Meech and Mike Hedden also scored for the Stars. Robinson got the start in place of the injured Nilstorp and stopped 38 of 42 shots.

Saturday, January 25: Grand Rapids 4, Texas 1

The Stars’ 12-game winnings streak at home came to an end with a 4-1 loss to Grand Rapids on Saturday night. The win moved the Griffins back into first place in the Western Conference, one point ahead of Texas. Mueller scored early in the second period to give Texas a 1-0 lead, but Grand Rapids scored four unanswered goals in a 12-minute span of the second to take control of the game. Texas’ top ranked power play went 0-5 in the game.

“I think our power play lost us this game today,” Mueller said. “We’ve been so good this season. Sometimes you are not going to get the bounces, but we did not create any momentum on them. Second period, four goals not good, but I think our power play let the team down today.”
