Peverley on Stars\u2019 Minds as They Prepare to Take on Blues

The Dallas Stars skated in St. Louis this morning as they prepared to take on the Blues tonight, but teammate Rich Peverley was in their thoughts.

Peverley is in stable condition and resting comfortably in a Dallas hospital after collapsing during last night’s game against Columbus at American Airlines Center. Doctors are trying to determine what caused Peverley to have a cardiac event during last night’s game. Stars players are relieved that Peverley, who has a history of heart issues, is doing well.

“It’s a big relief,” said Stars captain Jamie Benn. “We were pretty scared there. Once we found out he was good and stable, it was a very big relief. He’s in good hands. The medical staff did an unbelievable job taking care of him and it’s good to hear that he is doing good.”

“We all know the history of his condition and thankfully our medical staff was right there and did a tremendous job to revive him,” said Stars forward Ray Whitney. “It’s a scary moment not only for us, but his wife and son. As players, you wish the best for Rich, but you feel for his wife and family. It’s very traumatic. “

But despite Monday night’s tense, traumatic moments, the news was much more positive today. Peverley was doing fine and was in contact with his teammates.

“He’s doing good. He’s stable. He’s in good spirits,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “The few guys that have interacted with him say he has his sense of humor back already. He’s under good medical care and the story we get to tell is a real good one. That’s the part I like.”

With Peverley doing well, the Stars will try to focus on their game tonight against the Blues. Last night’s game against Columbus was suspended because of the emotional toll Peverley’s collapse took on the players, but the Stars think they are ready to move forward now.

“I had that question earlier, is it best to play or sit out and wait a few games. I guess time will tell, we’ll see tonight,” said Whitney. “I think, as a group, knowing that Rich is doing well, I think it is best to get going and play right away and get it behind us.”

“We have to focus on what we need to do tonight to get these points. We’re still in a big playoff race,” said Benn. “I guess we’ll be playing for Rich tonight.”

Chiasson shaken by Peverley incident, will miss tonight’s game

Forward Alex Chiasson did not travel with the team to St. Louis and will not play tonight. Chiasson was shaken up by the Rich Peverley incident, was taken to the hospital Monday night but is doing fine now.

“He was shaken, emotionally shaken,” said Stars coach Lindy Ruff. “He wasn’t doing very well, so we thought it was best to get him under some care. He’s going to be fine. Some players handled that well, some are more emotional and Alex was real stressed by it.”

Sceviour, Mueller recalled

With Rich Peverley and Alex Chiasson out for tonight’s game, the Stars recalled forwards Colton Sceviour and Chris Mueller from the Texas Stars of the AHL on Tuesday. Both Sceviour and Mueller will be in the lineup for tonight’s game against the Blues.

Nill statement on Peverley

Stars GM Jim Nill released a statement Tuesday morning updating Rich Peverley’s status.

Rich Peverley is resting comfortably and being monitored at UT Southwestern St. Paul. He is currently undergoing testing to discover what triggered the cardiac event last night.

“The focus of all the testing and monitoring is being dedicated to finding the cause of the event and a long-term solution to rectify the problem.

“We do not have any more specifics at the moment.

“Rich has been communicating with his teammates and friends. He is extremely grateful for all of the prayers and support that he's received from fans and friends alike."

“I think that medical community deserves a standing ovation for what they did with our player last night.”
