Razor With an Edge: Stat Class

“Statistics are merely a group of numbers in search of an argument.” “Statistics are like bikinis. They show a lot, but they don’t show everything.”

“Facts are stubborn things, but statistics are pliable.”

“99 percent of all statistics only tell 49 percent of the story.”

“Whenever I read statistical reports, I try to imagine my unfortunate contemporary, the Average Person, who, according to these reports, has 0.66 children, 0.032 cars, and 0.046 TVs.”

“They’ve done studies, you know. 60% of the time it works every time.”

I had a few minutes to nerd it up so I donned my tweed jacket with elbow patches and chalk on the sleeves, and poured over the numbers. Here are some stats pertaining to our Stars – both positive and not so positive - that I parsed from the tsunami of information our sport currently produces:

Treading Water: The Stars are 6-6-1 since the Olympics Break.

Demarcation Line: The Stars have won only three of eight since the Peverley cardiac episode and subsequent postponed game vs the Bluejackets and haven’t scored more than three goals in any of the eight. They were 7-2-1 in the ten games prior.

Arbitrary Special Teams: They are 10-5-1 last 16 games in which they scored a power play goal. 11-5-3 last 19 games that they held opposing PP scoreless.

I Feel the Need, the Need for a Lead: When the Stars have led after one period of play they have gone on to victory 78 percent of the time (11th best). When they trail that percentage drops to 19 percent (23rd best).

Execution: The Stars lead the league in Penalty Shots converted (4), that’s twice as many as any other team. Yet, they own the fourth worst shooting percentage in shootouts. (Doesn’t compute)

• In Overtime/Shootouts the Stars are 1-7 at home, 4-4 on the road.

This Might Help Explain OT Struggles: No team has allowed more 3 vs 4 power play goals (4) than the Dallas Stars. In fact 22 teams have allowed just one or none at all.

This Also Might Help Explain Those OT Struggles: When playing 4 on 4 the Stars have allowed nine goals, one shy of the most allowed by any team this season

Possession Slippage: Stars have been 50 percent or better in faceoffs just five times in the 13 games played since the Olympics Break. Overall they’ve slipped to fifteenth in league faceoff percentage.

This Can Be As Costly as Ex-Wives: Stars rank fifth in most giveaways with 704 (The Blues are kings of puck security with only 311 Giveaways).

Stars – Coyotes Troubling Juxtaposition Section

5 on 5 goals against DAL 20th, PHX 10th

5 on 4 PP goals for DAL 12th (40), PHX 3rd (50)

Most Turnovers DAL 5th, PHX 28th

Strangier Masochistic Coyote Stat: The Yotes have the second worst win percentage in the league when outshooting opponents (29%), second to (gulp) Buffalo, and sixth best when being outshot (63%).

Peter Positive Last Stars Stat: The Dallas Stars are tied for the best win percentage in the history of the NHL in games in which they score more goals than their opponent.
