Roussel Assists as France Stuns Canada at World Championship

Dallas Stars forward Antoine Roussel and France are at it again at the World Championship. Roussel, who scored the game-winning goal in an upset of Russia at last year’s tournament, set up the game-tying goal as France rallied to stun Canada, 3-2, in a shootout Friday in day one of preliminary round play at the 2014 World Championship in Belarus.

With France on the power play, Roussel won a battle behind the net and centered the puck to Stephane Da Costa, who beat Canadian goaltender James Reimer from close range to tie the game 2-2 with 7:25 left in regulation.

Pierre-Edouard Bellemare scored the only goal in the shootout to secure the victory for France, which got a big game from goaltender Cristobal Huet, who had 34 saves in the game and was a perfect 3-3 in the shootout.

“Any time we beat a top-six team, it’s huge,” France’s coach Dave Henderson told the IIHF website. “Canada is where hockey is. If you beat Canada, it's a huge thing for French hockey.”

Roussel played 19:52 in the game, had one shot on goal and was even for France, which plays Italy on Sunday.

Thomas backstops USA to win

Stars goaltender Tim Thomas stopped 20 of 21 shots as the United States opened World Championship play with a 6-1 victory over Belarus on Friday.

Winnipeg Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba scored two goals for the USA, which tallied three times on the power play.

This is the seventh time that Thomas has played for the USA at the World Championship.

The USA plays Switzerland on Saturday.
