Prospect Report: Memorial Cup Update

Dallas Stars forward prospects Jason Dickinson and Gemel Smith began play at the Memorial Cup in London, Ontario over the weekend. Dickinson and the Guelph Storm, the Ontario Hockey League champions, won their opening game. Smith and the London Knights, the host team for the tournament, lost their first two games.

The Edmonton Oil Kings, champions of the Western Hockey League, and the Val-d’Or Foreurs, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League champs, are also in the tournament.

Friday, May 16: Val-d'Or 1, London 0

Smith and London lost in the opening game of the Memorial Cup, falling 1-0 to Val-d'Or. Anthony Mantha scored the game’s only goal, finishing off a three-on-two rush with 3:40 left in the first period. London had a 51-27 shots advantage in the game, but couldn’t get a puck past Val-d’Or goaltender Antoine Bibeau.

Saturday, May 17: Guelph 5, Edmonton 2

Dickinson and Guelph defeated the Edmonton Oil Kings, 5-2, on day two of the Memorial Cup. Edmonton scored two goals 27 seconds apart early in the second period to take a 2-1 lead, but the Storm scored four unanswered goals to secure the victory. Dickinson had the secondary assist on Brock McGinn’s game-winning goal for the Storm.

Sunday, May 18: Edmonton 5, London 2

London fell to 0-2-0 in the tournament, losing 5-2 to Edmonton Sunday evening. Smith had no points and an even rating for London. The Knights, who were one of the top scoring teams in the OHL this season, have scored just two goals on 91 shots in the first two games of the tournament.

Notes

*Dickinson, who has one assist in one tournament game, is centering Guelph’s second line.

*Smith, who has no points in two games, is playing left wing on London’s third line.

*Guelph and Val-d’Or, which are both 1-0-0 at the tournament, play Monday night. Guelph can advance to the championship game with a victory.

*Round-robin play ends Wednesday. The first place team in the standings advances to the championship game. The second and third place teams meet in a semifinal game. The fourth place team is eliminated from the tournament.
