Quotable: Nill, Spezza, Hemsky and Lindback
Here are some quotes from Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill and newly acquired center Jason Spezza, right wing Ales Hemsky and goaltender Anders Lindback.

Here are some quotes from Dallas Stars GM Jim Nill and newly acquired center Jason Spezza, right wing Ales Hemsky and goaltender Anders Lindback.

Stars GM Jim Nill on the Jason Spezza deal with Ottawa

“Well, I think it’s a good hockey trade. Much like the trade last year with [Tyler] Seguin, I know when we first made the trade, it was wow, what a lopsided trade and all of sudden, people realized what Reilly Smith did and how good Loui Eriksson is. This is the same way. I compliment [Senators GM] Bryan Murray, his staff. I think they did a great job. Alex Chiasson, he was a great player for us, great young man. He’s only going to get better. He’s got good size. He’s got a scoring touch. He’s really just starting to reach his potential. The two young men they got, Alex Guptill, great size, was a big player at Michigan, has got a great scoring touch. And then I think the sleeper in the trade is going to be Nicholas Paul. He played in North Bay. He was a draft pick of ours. I told Bryan Murray when he made the trade with those players he picked the right guys. I said you’re going to be surprised by Nicholas Paul. They did their homework, so I’ve got to compliment them. It’s a great hockey trade for both sides.”

Nill on players like Jason Spezza and Ales Hemsky wanting to come to Dallas

“Well, I think we’re putting hockey back on the map here. I think Dallas is a great hockey town. You look back to when they were in their heydays, when they won the Cup and that Dallas was as good a city anywhere in the world for hockey, and I think we’re getting back there. We have a good core of kids and they’re not kids anymore but compared to my age, I guess they are, of great young players that are under the age of 25. And you mix that in with some of the great young players we’ve had down in Austin where they won the Calder Cup, I think there’s great things ahead for this organization. When you add a world-class player like Jason Spezza, who can bring his experiences, his skill level, I know he’s excited about coming here, winning. He wants to win a Cup. Same with Hemsky, you start putting those things together, I think there’s going to be some special things happening here.”

Ales Hemsky on why he wanted to play in Dallas

“Because they have great players like Jamie Benn and Seguin and they have more guys than that. They showed it last year, even in the playoffs, they have a great team to compete for a Stanley Cup, so that was a big factor for me.”

Hemsky on what Jaromir Jagr told him about playing in Dallas

“I talked to him actually when he was in Dallas. I asked about Dallas, how it is and he said it’s a great organization. I should definitely go play there one day. Now you mention that, I actually remember that but I forgot about that, so that’s pretty funny actually.”

Jason Spezza on Jamie Benn and Tyler Seguin

“I think those two guys are phenomenal, phenomenal hockey players and to think about being on a power play with those guys and to play with them, hopefully we can create some depth where it makes it difficult for teams to have waves of guys kind of coming at you. It’s a great situation for me to be on a team with such talented guys, that’s for sure.”

Spezza on Valeri Nichushkin

“Well, anyone that knows me knows that I watch a lot of hockey. He’s obviously one of those exciting, young players coming up in the League. To be that big and to skate as well as he does, I remember when we played against the Stars in Dallas there and he blew by a guy. I knew he was an exceptional skater and it barely looked like he was moving. So, it’s definitely someone that if I get a chance to play with, hopefully we can find some chemistry.”

Anders Lindback on Kari Lehtonen

“He’s a great goaltender. He’s always been a goaltender I’ve been looking at from when I was younger. He’s very athletic. I’m just excited to be a part of him, try to learn as much as possible, try to do my best to prove myself and maybe give him a little competition. From what I’ve heard, he’s also a really nice guy. I’m just looking forward to working with him.”

Lindback on his style

“Well, I’m just a big guy trying to use my size, trying to be in the right position and mix it up with the times when I can be athletic and go outside of the box. I don’t know, I’m kind of in between everything. I try to do everything to stop the puck and hopefully it works out.”

Spezza on the Stars playing up tempo

“They’re an attacking team and they have some guys in the back end that can really move the puck, so I’ve never been the fleetest of foot, but I play a fast, up-tempo game myself and I like to score off the rush and create opportunities. So I think I can add a dimension that maybe the team needs. You’re just hoping it’s a good fit and I think that it will be.”

Nill on if there could be any more moves

“I’m tired for today. We got one spot we can add but we’re just going to kind of sit on the outside and see what happens. It’s kind of a depth, fourth line, third, fourth line depth type of position. But we filled our void, picking up Anders Lindback as our backup goalie. We’re excited about him. I know Mike Valley, our goalie coach, he’s excited about being able to work with him. He’s somebody we’ve been watching for a few years and then when you look at what we added to our up front with our forwards, we’ve had a good day.”
