On the Radar: Stepping Up to the Challenge

If you follow social media in any capacity, chances are you’ve seen a lot of ALS Ice Bucket Challenges in the last week or two. For those who haven’t, the Ice Bucket Challenge is a social media campaign that “challenges” people to pour a bucket of freezing-cold, ice water over their heads or make a donation to help the fight against ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Once completed, the person then passes the challenge along to others, and before you know it, you have a viral campaign that has swept the nation.

As the Ice Bucket Challenge has gained momentum, the hockey world has been extremely active in participating. Those who follow a large number of hockey players, coaches, and front office personnel on Twitter have probably had their feeds taken over by videos one after another of people drenching themselves in sub-32 degree liquid. In the case of the Dallas Stars, we’ve seen Tyler Seguin complete the challenge at center ice of a hockey rink, Owner Tom Gaglardi getting drenched at the base of a lake, Lindy Ruff and his family perform theirs dockside, Ralph Strangis check his off in the Pacific Ocean, and Daryl Reaugh dressed to the nines before his moistening. (By the way, I can’t wait to see Razor’s list complete their challenges from Nakatomi Plaza and an abandoned warehouse.)

All told more than half of the Stars roster has participated from various locales throughout the continent. If you want to see all of the Stars Ice Bucket Challenges, you can check them out here.

Now, many out there have asked what pouring ice water on your head has to do with battling ALS. Well, as it turns out, the answer is quite a bit. In a two week span from July 29-August 12, the ALS Association has reported $4 million in donations. That is more than a 300% increase from the same time period last year. And the numbers are continuing to grow at an astounding rate. This movement has brought the fight against ALS to the forefront of our society, albeit in the most untraditional of ways. People are completing the challenge, but also donating money. And the Stars have jumped right in. We mentioned earlier that Owner Tom Gaglardi had completed his Ice Bucket Challenge, but there’s more to the story.

In a recent video that showed Stars President Jim Lites, GM Jim Nill, and former player and Director of the Alumni Association, Bob Bassen all complete the challenge, it was announced that both the Dallas Stars Foundation and Gaglardi personally, each had donated $10,000 toward the fight against ALS. The Stars embracing this social media initiative the way they have, while donating large sums of money to help the cause, is the latest example of the youthful, interactive, results-oriented direction of the organization.

It’s terrific to see, and has been pretty fun to watch.

The Stars have joined the fight, and you can too. For more information on how you can join the battle against ALS, please visit www.alsa.org.

Finally, if you haven’t seen NHL forward Paul Bissonnette complete his challenge, it’s worth a few minute of your time. The video can be seen here.
