The Stick with Reading program faces-off on Monday, October 19, 2009 and concludes on Monday, December 14, 2009.
Recognizing that illiteracy has become one of the most pervasive problems in our nation, the Dallas Stars Foundation has created the Dallas Stars Stick with Reading program presented by MetroPCS and JC Penney. Dallas Stars’ goaltender Marty Turco currently serves as spokesman for the program, which encourages students to develop the healthy habit of reading in their leisure time. Students will record their reading minutes over the eight-week period and are eligible to receive incentive prizes and be named to the All-Star Reader Team. The program is completely free and open to all Metroplex classrooms, private or public, in grades K-8.
The Dallas Stars Stick with Reading program presented by MetroPCS and JC Penney has reached hundreds of thousands of kids across North Texas since its inception in 1998, and each year we receive more and more positive feedback about the impact this program is having in the lives of Metroplex kids. Students who were previously never inclined to read outside of the classroom suddenly discover the excitement and enrichment offered by reading in their leisure time. They are encouraged to hear their sports heroes say how “cool” reading is and how much of a benefit it has been in their own careers.
