General Information

Since opening in July 2001, the American Airlines Center has set a new standard for sports and entertainment and has become the premier venue of the South. I'ts grand complex with sweeping vistas and inviting passages comprise five concourses, 142 luxury suites, two 50 person "party" suites, and room for 18,532 hockey fans.

ARENA FACTS

Ice Surface: The slab beneath the ice contains eight miles of one-inch pipe and requires 10,000 gallons of water for one sheet of ice. The arena also has a 4,600-ton air conditioning system and a dehumidification system that extracts 500 gallons of moisture per hour.

--Lights: There are over 250 lights mounted in the ceiling of American Airlines Center. They feature Kevlar shutters which will allow for dimming and blackout conditions.

--Scoreboard: Developed by Daktronics, the scoreboard measures 49'1" in diameter and weighs 80,000 pounds. The four video screens measure 16¹ x 9¹ which alternate with four color screens that measure 9' x 12'. The scoreboard features 2.4 million red, green and blue lights, which illuminate to show live video, replays and animation.

--Seating: American Airlines Center seats 18,500 fans for hockey, 19,200 for basketball, plus up to 20,000 for concerts and other events. Thanks to the most sophisticated retractable seating system ever designed, American Airlines Center can be converted from an ice rink to a basketball court in less than three hours, a process that took over eight hours at Reunion Arena.

--Size: American Airlines Center encompasses 840,000 total square feet and features five concourses. The roof covers over four acres with more than one million bricks and 50,000 square feet of glass and glazing used in construction.
