Season series -- This is the second of four meetings between the teams. Behind a pair of power-play goals, the Stars skated away with a 3-1 win at Detroit on Nov. 18.
Big story -- Monday marks the return of Stars forward Fabian Brunnstrom from the American Hockey League. The highly-touted Swede was sent to AHL Texas on a two-game conditioning stint after going 4-1-5 in 17 games for the big club.
Stars -- Dallas is coming off a 4-3 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night, although it came the hard way. The Stars blew a late two-goal lead but managed to come away with the two points when Tom Wandell scored at 2:12 of overtime at the American Airlines Center.
"The two points is crucial," coach Marc Crawford said. "I liked our chances going into overtime. We got our couple of opportunities in overtime and scored on the second one. It's huge (that) we get the two points. They're not always going to be masterpieces. Tonight, I thought we did a lot more things correctly than not."
Red Wings -- Detroit was breathing sighs of relief all the way home on its flight from St. Louis on Saturday. Not only did the Wings break a goal-less drought of more than 175 minutes, but they also ended a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 shootout victory against the Blues.
"Overall, we found a way to do it," coach Mike Babcock said. "Obviously, things haven't gone well for us here of late. But we've played real well."
Who's hot -- Wandell's OT goal on Saturday was his fourth of the season. Three of them are game-winners. … Henrik Zetterberg had a goal and an assist in St. Louis, while Jimmy Howard made 32 saves through overtime and then stopped three of four in the shootout.
Injury report -- The Stars activated Brian Sutherby from injured reserve on Saturday and are now playing with a healthy lineup. … Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall (sprained MCL) and winger Jason Williams (fractured right fibula) are expected to be out until mid-January, while center Valtteri Filppula could miss another month with a broken wrist. Johan Franzen (torn ACL) is likely out until after the Olympic break and Andreas Lilja is out indefinitely due to post-concussion syndrome.
Stat pack -- Injuries have limited Stars veteran Jere Lehtinen to just 11 games this season, but his next point will be the 500th of his career.
Puck drop -- Given the fact that both teams are coming off dramatic victories on Saturday, the intensity should be visible right from the opening face-off. Detroit will need more contributions from Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk if it plans on staying in the Central Division race, and it will be interesting to see if Howard can pry the No. 1 job from Chris Osgood with a few more solid performances.
