DALLAS (AP) _ The Dallas Stars made the most of their final regular-season shot at the Colorado Avalanche.

Jason Arnott scored three goals and Pierre Turgeon added a power-play goal and an assist as the Stars beat the Avalanche for the first time this season, 5-1 Friday night.

The Stars had been outscored by the Avalanche 11-3 in their first three games.

``They've certainly taken it to us the first three games,'' Stars coach Dave Tippett said. ``This was our chance to redeem ourselves. We came out and played hard. We were very determined.''

Scott Young added a third-period goal and Marty Turco stopped 15 shots for the Stars, 10-3-2 in their last 15 games.

Sergei Zubov and Bill Guerin had two assists each for the Stars.

Arnott completed his fifth career hat trick with 5.4 seconds left on the power play.

``We wish we could play every game like that,'' Arnott said. ``They had an off night and we played well. I wanted to go at it as hard as I could. Tonight the pucks just went in.''

The Avs, losing their third straight, avoided a shutout on Karlis Skrastins' goal with 2:24 to play.

The teams wrapped up their regular-season series with seven fighting majors in the third period.

Dallas' Aaron Downey and Colorado's Peter Worrell tangled in a fight that lasted almost four minutes. Avalanche defenseman Chris McAllister instigated the brawl, earning 29 minutes in penalties for the altercation, including a game misconduct.

``It turned out to be a pretty good fight,'' Downey said. ``It was a long one. McAllister wanted to fight me, but I wanted the heavyweight.''

Colorado started the night with a 16-3-7-3 road record, best in the Western Conference. But it was without two of its best players, center Peter Forsberg and defenseman Rob Blake. Forsberg was scratched with a recurring groin injury and Blake was placed on injured reserve earlier in the day with a hairline fracture of his lower left leg.

``Everybody goes through tough times,'' Avalanche right wing Teemu Selanne said. ``We've got some big guys hurt right now, but that's no excuse. We've got to find a way to win games. We've got too much pride to lose games.''

The Stars took a 1-0 lead in the second period on a power play when Turgeon's wrist shot from the left circle got past screened goaltender David Aebischer.

Dallas had been outscored by Colorado 9-0 in the opening two periods of their first three meetings this season.

``We beat them a few times and everyone wrote them off,'' Colorado coach Tony Granato said. ``I knew they'd be right there at the end and they're really starting to show that. We didn't play intense enough to win and they played extremely well. We didn't respond or solve anything offensively.''

Arnott made it 2-0 with an outstanding individual effort. Arnott skated into the Colorado zone, went around Avs defenseman Martin Skoula and beat Aebischer with a forehand.

Arnott extended the lead to 3-0 in the third period from close range between Aebischer's pads.

Young gave Dallas a 4-0 pad, converting Turgeon's pass for Young's eighth goal.
