VANCOUVER, British Columbia (AP) - Lee Goren was struggling with his aim, so he decided to go right to the front of the net. The move paid off immediately.
Goren scored the tiebreaking goal on a deflection 3:47 into the third period to lead the Vancouver Canucks to a 5-2 victory over the Dallas Stars on Sunday night.
The goal was Goren's first since playing with Boston in 2002-03, and came seconds after he shot wide on a partial break. He circled behind the net as the puck caromed off the boards and back to the point, and arrived back in front just in time to tip Jarkko Ruutu's long shot underneath Marty Turco.
``I think that shift I missed the net three times,'' Goren said. ``So I just went to the net and got a tip, and it went through Marty's legs.
Todd Bertuzzi added a power-play goal - the 200th goal of his career - with 5:29 left to play and Richard Park made it 5-2 with a long shot that got past Turco with 2:20 remaining.
Daniel Sedin and Sami Salo also scored man-advantage goals for the Canucks (4-1-1), who came into the game ranked 25th on the power play but converted three of 10 chances against Dallas.
``We were hovering near the bottom and it was nice to rebound and get some big ones,'' said defenseman Ed Jovanovski, who had three power-play assists. ``We needed to get more pucks to the net instead of making that one extra pass. Establish a shot first and that will open things up.''
Dallas gave the Canucks lots of early power-play practice, taking three penalties in the first 5 1/2 minutes. Sedin banged in a loose puck during a 5-on-3 advantage at 5:47, and Salo sent a slap shot over Turco's shoulder at 6:16 after Stephane Robidas' clearing attempt went straight to him at the point.
Jere Lehtinen tied it with a pair of scores 3 1/2 minutes apart in the second, but the Stars had their three-game win streak snapped by Goren's goal - and three more penalties in the final eight minutes.
``It's frustrating to lose that type of game that way, but it's the way the game is being called,'' Dallas captain Mike Modano said. ``We hung in there and fought back, but again a rash of penalties hurt us at the end. Constantly killing (penalties) all night long, it takes a toll on you.''
Turco finished with 29 saves as the Stars (4-2-0) finally had a game decided by more than one goal. Dallas opened with five straight one-goal games and had won the last four by a 3-2 score.
Alex Auld stopped 18 shots for the Canucks, whose only struggles on the power play came after a tripping penalty on Turco gave them a 2-minute, two-man advantage midway through the first.
With a chance to increase the early lead against a Dallas team playing its third road game in four nights, Vancouver managed just two shots, setting the stage for the Stars' comeback in the second.
Modano set up Lehtinen from behind the net with a perfect saucer pass after he got Auld moving the wrong way at 5:00. Lehtinen tied it 2:35 later - this time Brenden Morrow passed it from behind the net - with a 20-foot one-timer that eluded Auld from a sharp angle.
``We started off with some big goals and kind of fell asleep for 5 minutes in the second period,'' Jovanovski said. ``But we addressed it in the third and we didn't deviate from what made us successful. Our game is north-south and getting pucks in and get shots going to the net.''
Notes: Dallas defenseman Phillippe Boucher received 19 penalty minutes for starting a fight with Goren after Goren clipped Turco after getting out of the penalty box for interfering with the goalie. ... Vancouver came into the game 3-1-1 despite being outscored 17-15 this year.
