SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - Jussi Jokinen gives himself a couple of options in a shootout and makes his choice on his way to the net.
He has had the right decision twice.
Jokinen and Sergei Zubov beat Evgeni Nabokov in a shootout to give the Dallas Stars a 3-2 victory over the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night.
"I was pretty confident I was going to get the goal," Jokinen said of the shot that gave the Stars the advantage. "We have good shooters with good moves and when Sergei scored first, it made it easier for me. I always think of two or three options I can use and I choose as I skate in."
Phillippe Boucher and Jason Arnott scored in regulation to help the Stars win for the fourth time in five games and avenge an earlier home overtime loss to the Sharks. Dallas improved to 5-2 on the road.
"In camp we all talked about how we wanted to improve on the road to be more like a playoff team," Stars center Matt Modano said. "We had a great 30 minutes and then we let down. We played solid in the third period but not enough to win. Considering we're 2-0 doing this, we like (the shootout)."
Steve Bernier and Alyn McCauley scored for the Sharks, who lost their third straight. Patrick Marleau and Jonathon Cheechoo missed their shootout attempts.
"They came out and jumped all over us," Cheechoo said. "We just weren't prepared. In the second period we started to win some of the smaller battles."
After taking a season-low two shots in the third period, the Stars sent five shot at Nabokov in overtime.
Boucher scored on a power play to give the Stars a 1-0 lead with 14:06 remaining in the first period. He took a pass from Matt Modano at the point and fired the puck past Nabokov to extend the Stars' power-play goal streak to eight games.
Arnott's unassisted goal gave Dallas a 2-0 edge with 6:41 left in the first. Arnott scooped up a loose puck along the boards and beat Nabokov on a breakaway. San Jose defender Rob Davison momentarily lost his balance on the play, giving Arnott the edge.
The Stars have won all three games in which Arnott has scored this year and improved to 18-1-2 in those games since the beginning of the 2003-04 season.
Nabokov, returning from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for three weeks, faced 10 shots in the first period.
"I think he might admit he should have gotten those first two goals," Sharks coach Ron Wilson said. "He played much better in the second half and we played well in front of him. We got a point but we should have win that game. When you have 15 of 18 skaters working hard that doesn't do it. I need more participants than spectators. If you want to watch the game spend $75 like everybody else."
The Sharks tied it with goals in a 1:50 span in the second period.
Bernier, playing his fourth NHL game, scored his first career goal on a rebound off Marty Torco's pads with 8:41 left. Mark Smith took a hard shot from the point that Turco couldn't cover. said
McCauley tied it with a power-play goal with 6:51 left in the period when he redirected a shot from Patrick Marleau past Turco, who improved to 8-1-1 in 11 career games against the Sharks.
Notes: Arnott scored his 22nd career goal against the Sharks, his most against any team. ... Modano has points in 14 of 17 games this season. ... The Sharks have scored a power-play goal in eight of their last 10 games. ... Dallas improved to 2-0 in shootout games, while San Jose dropped to 1-1.
