DALLAS (AP) - Mike Modano carried his team through regulation with a pair of goals, then pulled out his best move in the shootout.

Modano ended Dallas' first home shootout in the third round, lifting the Stars to a 5-4 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes in dramatic fashion on Friday night.

In a move Modano practices, he yanked the puck from his forehand to his backhand and returned to the forehand, pulling Carolina goalie Martin Gerber out of position. Modano hesitated, then stuffed the puck between the post and Gerber's right pad.

"That was my plan," Modano said. "I have that move. I go to the well if I have a chance to go to the goal on that move ... usually get (the goalie) sliding, stop and hold on a little while and then put it over."

The Hurricanes claimed Modano's shootout goal should have been disallowed. They contended that Modano stopped his forward motion and that the puck didn't cross the goal line. The goal stood following a video replay.

"We just wanted to make sure that it went in. It didn't look like it did," Carolina captain Rod Brind'Amour said.

Jussi Jokinen converted on Dallas' second shootout opportunity after Matt Cullen scored for the Hurricanes.

Stars goalie Johan Hedberg denied Radim Vrbata on the Hurricanes' first chance in the shootout, and Gerber stopped Sergei Zubov to finish the first round.

Modano broke a nine-game scoring drought with his two goals, one in the game's opening minute and the second on the power play.

The Hurricanes trailed 3-1 and 4-2 but rallied with third-period goals by Cory Stillman and Justin Williams to send the game to overtime, where Carolina failed to convert on two power-play chances.

Dallas' penalty killing in overtime gave the Stars a chance to win.

"It seems like every game, special teams become a factor at some point," Stars penalty killer Stu Barnes said. "We had a lot of (penalty killing) late, especially when you get into overtime, 4-on-3, it's a different situation."

Niko Kapanen and Brenden Morrow added goals for Dallas, which has won 11 of 13.

The Stars gave top goalie Marty Turco the night off, going with Hedberg, who stopped 16 shots. Hedberg played his fifth game of the season, getting his first start since Nov. 2 when he lost 6-3 to the Los Angeles Kings.

Rookies Niklas Nordgren and Andrew Ladd also scored for the Hurricanes, who opened a five-game, 11-day road trip.

"Take the point and run out of here," Carolina coach Peter Laviolette said. "We had way too many guys not working. The game itself was not good by our standards."

Stillman cut Dallas' lead to 4-3 at 7:40 of the third period.

The Hurricanes thought they tied it at 8:56, but an apparent goal by Ladd was disallowed because Brind'Amour was penalized for goalie interference after crashing into Hedberg.

Williams got the Hurricanes even at 4 with a power-play deflection at 14:49.

Modano, who hadn't scored since Nov. 7, got his eighth of the season 46 seconds in - poking in the rebound of his own shot.

Nordgren tied it at 1 for Carolina when he beat a screened Hedberg at 7:41 of the first period, but Kapanen's rebound at 9:12 put Dallas back in front.

Modano scored on the fourth shot of a power-play sequence at 14:47 of the first period, pushing the Stars' lead to 3-1 over the reeling Hurricanes.

"Horrible start," Brind'Amour said. "I don't know how to explain it. We're giving up way too many easy goals. You can't do that and expect to come back every time."

Ladd banked a power-play goal off Stars defenseman Philippe Boucher at 5:24 of the second period to draw Carolina within 3-2.

Morrow restored the Stars' two-goal edge, converting Jason Arnott's cross-ice pass at 12:57 of the frame.

Notes: Both teams played their first interconference game. ... Carolina D Glen Wesley left the game with about 15 minutes left in regulation after being accidentally hit in the face by the stick of Dallas RW Bill Guerin as Guerin followed through on a shot. Wesley skated off without assistance and received stitches to close a cut on his nose. ... The Stars have at least one power-play goal in 16 straight games, one short of matching the franchise record set between Oct. 11-Nov. 18, 1986, when the team was in Minnesota. ... Zubov's assist on Modano's first goal gave him 315 with the Stars, tying Craig Hartsburg for the most by a defenseman in franchise history. ... Boucher left the game in the third period with an upper body injury. ... Dallas is 3-0 in shootouts; Carolina is 2-1.
