DALLAS (AP) - The Phoenix Coyotes got off only two shots in the third period Friday night and they came 22 seconds apart.
That both went in is pretty amazing, especially since the drives rallied Phoenix to a 3-2 victory over the Dallas Stars.
Even more surprising is who scored them: Shane Doan, who had a 10-game goal drought and had scored once in his previous 18 games; and Dave Scatchard, who scored in his Phoenix debut on Nov. 19 and didn't have another the last 13 games.
"I've been a little snakebitten," Scatchard said. "I've just been working hard to get something going and I got a lucky goal to help us win."
The Coyotes won for a second straight night after losing a season-worst four in a row.
The Stars were coming off a great road trip with streaks of three wins in four games and eight of 10. This also was only the second home loss for Dallas in its last nine, with both defeats coming against the Coyotes.
No wonder coach Dave Tippett was fuming afterward.
"It's not what we did but what we didn't do," he said. "We have impact players that didn't make an impact on the game. We gift-wrapped it for them. ... Those guys played last night. We should've come out guns a blazing. But we played like it was a nice Christmas game."
The Coyotes took only 13 shots all game, which is low even for Dallas' defense. The Stars give up an NHL-low 25.9 per game.
Phoenix needed more than 13 minutes for the first one to be recorded. The Coyotes went ahead on their third shot, when Mike Ricci was being taken down but still managed to get enough of a swat by Sean O'Donnell to redirect it past goaltender Marty Turco.
But with 6:10 left, Doan caught Turco leaning the wrong way on a 2-on-1 rush with Ladislav Nagy. The next time down the ice, Turco went behind the net to play the puck and got stuck there after being hit by Ricci. The puck came around to Scatchard and he easily popped it into an empty net for the winning goal.
"It was a lucky play," said Ricci, who got an assist. "I was just trying to put pressure on him there. I got my butt up against the board and we made a great play out of it."
The Stars failed to score on several power plays, including during a wild final minute in which they pulled the goalie to have advantages of 5-on-3 and 6-on-4. Boucher, who stopped 26 shots, triumphantly raised an arm when the horn sounded.
The Coyotes were coming off a home win over San Jose on Thursday night. This one made interim coach Rick Tocchet 2-2 in place of Wayne Gretzky, who left the team indefinitely. His mother was buried Thursday in Canada, and he's expected to return after Christmas.
Phoenix also won in Dallas on Nov. 25. Doan, who on Wednesday was picked for Canada's Olympic team, probably remembers that game because it was the last time he'd scored until this one.
The Stars were without leading goal scorer Jere Lehtinen because of the flu and didn't get a point from Mike Modano, ending his streak of 10 with a goal or an assist.
Notes: Phoenix's 13 shots were a season low and two shy of the franchise low. ... Modano's career best point streak is 11. ... Coyotes C Mike Comrie notched the 100th assist of his career on Doan's goal. ... Phoenix C Petr Nedved left with a groin injury in the middle of the first period and didn't return. ... Division rivalries must be heating up. There was a fight only 2:16 in, with Dallas' Nathan Perrott taking down Phoenix's Tim Jackman.
