DALLAS (AP) - The Los Angeles Kings have made themselves right at home in Texas.
Mathieu Garon made 38 saves, Derek Armstrong scored a power-play goal and Los Angeles won in Dallas for the third time this season, holding off the Stars 3-2 on Saturday night. Alexander Frolov and Tom Kostopoulos added goals to help the Kings take a three-point lead over the second-place Stars in the Pacific Division
Dallas' Mike Modano had two power-play goals in the third period to make it close.
"They're a good team," Kings coach Andy Murray said. "You're always playing against a good team when you come here. With Modano energizing them with those two power-play goals, after that they were tough to handle."
The Kings, who've won seven of their last nine, were playing the last of four regular-season games in Dallas this season. They won three times and have the final four games of the season series in Los Angeles starting on Monday night.
"They seem to have our number here," Dallas' Jason Arnott said, "so we'll have to play solid road hockey when we get there."
The Kings' only loss to the Stars this season came in the opener on Oct. 5 when Los Angeles built a 4-0 first-period lead, then saw Dallas rally for a 5-4 decision.
"We tried not to talk about (the blown lead) before the game," Kostopoulos said. "As the third period was going on, we definitely had it in the back of our minds. It was a huge win. In two nights, we play them again."
The Stars, who held a 17-1 shots advantage in the third period, pulled goalie Marty Turco for a sixth skater with 47 seconds left, but failed to score.
"Throughout the game we had our chances," Modano said. "They got some lucky breaks for goals. Sometimes that's how you win on the road."
Murray used the Kings' timeout after Modano's second goal in an effort to calm his team.
"I told them how we played in the last 12 minutes would be important," Murray said. "Most teams would like to have the lead in the last 12 minutes in Dallas. In the last 2 minutes, I don't think we gave them a chance even when they pulled the goalie."
Turco stopped 20 shots for the Stars, 4-4 in their last eight home games.
Los Angeles jumped in front at 3:42 of the first period when Frolov knocked a loose puck through Turco's pads.
The Kings made it 2-0 on a power play when Armstrong converted Craig Conroy's pass through the crease at 6:41 of the second period.
That broke Dallas' streak of 38 successful penalty kills.
Kostopoulos stretched the Kings' advantage to 3-0 at 14:11 of the second period, beating Turco from the slot after a back-pass from Dustin Brown.
The Kings appeared to be cruising toward their first shutout victory of the season before Modano took advantage of a 5-on-3 at 5:27 of the third period with a shot from the right circle. Modano made it 3-2 only 1:25 later with his 15th goal, scoring from the left circle during a 5-on-4.
Notes: The Stars lost on New Year's Eve for the first time since moving to Dallas in 1993, falling to 6-1-2. ... Kings D Denis Grebeshkov's assist on Kostopoulos' goal was his second NHL point. ... Modano had two power-play goals in a game for the first time since Nov. 9, 1997, against Phoenix.
