GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) - Shootouts are virtually automatic victories for the Dallas Stars. Saturday night was no exception.
Jussi Jokinen and Bill Guerin scored shootout goals to give the Stars a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.
The victory was the 51st of the season for the Stars, matching their franchise record set in 1998-99, the year Dallas won its only Stanley Cup. Dallas improved to 12-1 in shootouts this season.
Guerin, whose goal as the third skater in the shootout clinched the victory, had missed the last 11 games with a fractured orbital bone in his right eye socket.
"I felt good," he said. "I'm just going to need these last couple of games to get in shape for the playoffs, and tonight was a step in the right direction."
It was his first shootout goal.
"Lord knows he's been shooting enough pucks the last week," Dallas coach Dave Tippett said. "Hopefully with something like that he gets a spark, gets him back in the groove."
Both Thomas and Geoff Sanderson missed their shootout attempts for Phoenix.
"We were all right," Tippett said of his team's overall performance. "I wouldn't class that as a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination - from play to officiating to the whole works."
Jokinen is the league's master in shootouts. He made his first nine this season, but had missed his last three.
Power-play goals by Shane Doan and Bill Thomas put the Coyotes ahead 2-0 at 8:47 of the third period. It was the first NHL goal for Thomas, a 22-year-old right wing signed out of the University of Nebraska-Omaha on March 27.
His score came when goalie Johan Hedberg deflected Doan's shot.
"The goalie made a great save," Thomas said. "I was just kind of in the right place at the right time."
But Dallas scored on Philippe Boucher's power play goal at 10:51, then tied it at 2-2 on Brenden Morrow's one-timer at 14:22.
"Our Achilles' heel has been killing penalties at home," Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky said. "They get a power play goal and it's a 2-1 hockey game. You get the number of points they have as a team by hard work, and we knew they weren't going to quit by any means."
Phoenix had a power play to start the overtime but couldn't score.
The Stars were playing two nights after clinching their seventh division title in nine seasons with a 5-3 victory at Anaheim. Dallas was without captain Mike Modano, who injured his left knee in the second period of that game. The injury is not considered serious.
The Coyotes broke a scoreless tie with 1:01 left in the first period at 19:59 on a power play when Paul Mara's left-handed shot first was deflected by Mike Johnson, then by Doan into the net to the right of goalie Johan Hedberg. It was a team-high 29th goal of the season for the Coyotes' captain.
But Phoenix failed to score, and got off only one shot, with a two-man advantage for two minutes early in the second period after Morrow went to the penalty box for holding and teammate Antti Miettinen for hooking.
"That's huge, you know," Guerin said. "Our guys that work in the five-on-threes, they're workhorses and they sacrifice their bodies. That stuff wins you games."
Notes: Before the game, Joseph was given a watch to commemorate moving to No. 6 in career NHL wins. ... The Coyotes lost Tyson Nash with a thigh bruise in the first period. ... Modano has missed only 30 games in the past seven seasons, two this season.
