DALLAS (AP) -The Detroit Red Wings lived up their high-flying name Friday night against the Dallas Stars.
Defenseman Niklas Lidstrom scored his first two goals of the season and the Red Wings handed the Stars their first home loss of the season, 4-3 on Friday night.
Jiri Hudler and Pavel Datsyuk added goals, and Dominik Hasek stopped 17 shots for the Red Wings (5-4-1).
Detroit had lost three straight on the road, but the Red Wings came out fast against the Stars and finished with a 33-20 shots advantage.
"They're a good team. Don't let their record fool you," Stars coach Dave Tippett said. "Detroit is close to the top in the league in puck possession. We got schooled tonight."
Mike Modano had two power-play goals for Dallas (8-2-0).
Despite the loss, Dallas still matched the 1996-97 team for the best start in franchise history.
Marty Turco made 29 saves, and Jussi Jokinen added a power-play goal for the Stars, who had won their first three at home.
"Anytime you can step up and beat a team that's 8-1 in their first nine games, you know you've done something," Detroit's Kris Draper said.
Turco, the former University of Michigan star who started the night second in the NHL with seven wins, has a 1-7-5 career regular-season record against the Red Wings. Detroit had traffic in front of Turco all night.
"It's part of their game plan," Turco said. "I just have to do a better job of finding the puck. When you can't see it, you just have to find ways to stop it."
Hudler's rebound 1:55 after the opening faceoff gave Detroit early momentum.
"You have to be ready to skate with those guys or they'll leave you in the dust," Modano said.
Modano tied it at 1 only 18 seconds into a Dallas power play with a brilliant solo rush, weaving around two defenders and firing a wrist shot past Hasek at 2:42.
Lidstrom, Detroit's captain, gave the Red Wings a 2-1 edge with 2:13 left in the opening period, beating Turco from the left point while teammate Tomas Holmstrom screened the goalie for Lidstrom's first goal of the season.
"It feels great to get rid of the zero in the stats but it's more important to get the win," Lidstrom said. "The whole team responded well."
Jokinen tied it at 2 on a power play 27 seconds into the second period when he deflected Darryl Sydor's shot past Hasek.
Detroit grabbed a 3-2 lead at 2:09 of the second period on Datsyuk's rebound as the Red Wings took advantage of Sydor's turnover.
The Red Wings capitalized on a two-man advantage at 8:22 of the second period with Lidstrom's second goal of the night to make it 4-2.
Dallas held a two-man advantage when Modano's goal off a rebound narrowed the deficit to 4-3 at 12:13 of the second period.
The Stars had a chance to tie early in the third period when Detroit's Tomas Kopecky received a double-minor for high-sticking. But Dallas was unable to mount any sustained pressure and managed only six shots in the third period.
"The one that could have got us back to even was the four-minute power play," Tippett said. "But we didn't score when we needed to and we didn't keep up with the tempo of the game. Our execution was poor tonight."
Notes: Modano has a four-game goal streak, two short of his career high, and has scored seven goals overall. Modano has his fastest seven goals since 1997-98. ... Detroit is 10-5-6 against Dallas in the past six regular seasons.
