SUNRISE, Fla. - The Stars improved their preseason record to 4-1 on Tuesday night, defeating the Florida Panthers at BankAtlantic Center by a final score of 4-3 in overtime. Michael Ryder has the game-winner.

FIRST PERIOD:

Kari Lehtonen, who has historically played well against Florida, made the start in goal, along with the forward line of Matt Fraser, Mike Ribeiro, and Michael Ryder. Sheldon Souray and Stephane Robidas were the defensive pair to start the contest.

A neutral zone breakdown led to Florida forward Tomas Fleischmann scoring high blocker on Kari Lehtonen to send the Panthers up 1-0 midway through the first period.

Dallas would get an opportunity to even things up later on in the period off two separate Florida penalties, but failed to generate any offensive chances and only one shot with the man-advantage.

Although the Stars held a 7-5 edge in shots after the first period, the Panthers took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

SECOND PERIOD:

An especially strong second period by Lehtonen, who stopped 14 pucks in the frame, gave Dallas the momentum it was seeking to even things up and eventually overtake the Panthers on the scoreboard.

A turnover by the Panthers in their own zone allowed Jake Dowell to strip the puck and feed Tomas Vincour to the front of the net to even the game at 1-1 midway into the second period.

Loui Eriksson added his first goal of the preseason off a pass from Mike Ribeiro to push the Stars advantage to 2-1.

Florida penalties gave Dallas the team’s second five-on-three opportunity this preseason late in the second period, but were unable to capitalize on the two-man advantage. Michael Ryder’s point blank shot at the net was smothered by Panthers goaltender Tyler Plante.

Despite Florida gaining a late power play, it was Dallas’ Toby Petersen who took advantage of the opportunity and gave Dallas a 3-1 lead on a shorthanded breakaway goal at the 18:29 mark of the second.

Dallas would end the second frame up, 3-1, with a 21-19 edge in shots.

THIRD PERIOD/OVERTIME:

The Stars managed to kill off an early 5-on-3 Panther power play to keep Florida looking up on the scoreboard.

Dallas’ penalty trouble continued in the period, and the Panthers got an extended two-man advantage, tying things up at 3-3. Shots in the third were 25 for Florida, 3 for Dallas.

“I thought our PK got a working over in the third,” said Stars head coach Glen Gulutzan. “I thought we did a pretty good job though. It’s hard to kill a 5-on-3 for about four minutes. But we have to be more disciplined. It’s still the exhibition season and I liked the first two periods.”

Lehtonen saved his best for the final period.

“Kari was unbelievable, he’s the reason we won tonight,” said Gulutzan. “He was the difference tonight, especially when you take that many penalties. Your goalie has to be your best player and he was.”

“That certainly was a lot of work there in the third period,” said Lehtonen. “We took a lot of penalties. It was good for me to play a lot of penalty killing, especially in the preseason. It was good for me and it ended well.”

It ended well, indeed, as Ryder won the game in overtime for the Stars.

“(Ryder) has some natural chemistry with Ribeiro,” said Gulutzan. “I really like him. His shot is really good. I think he’s going to be a really good well-rounded player for us.”

The Stars and Panthers will meet up once again on Thursday night in Dallas at 7:30 p.m. at American Airlines Center.
